As someone who loved and lost deeply, I started to feel something different about my grief. An emotion so special and unique. That was hard to express in words!
Losing my little baby Alfie affected me in ways I never imagined.
I remembered him when I was happy and definitely when I felt sad.
It was as though I was carrying him with me every moment without even realizing that I was. I still do!
The hardest part of losing Alfie wasn’t just saying goodbye. It was about reaching out for him only to realize that he wasn’t there and would never be.
I always knew I’d feel deeply for my pet whenever I got one. Getting Alfie became one of the greatest joys of my life. And losing him the greatest pain I could endure.
He was my first pet, and losing him within just a few months wasn’t something I was ready to process.
The pain was gut-wrenching; his thoughts never left me.
As months passed by, the pain grew more, and the void got bigger. I found myself lost in the hollow space he left behind.
That’s when I began asking myself – is this normal?
There were so many questions in my mind..
Am I being too emotional?
Should I try harder to move on?
Is it healthy to feel like this after these many months?
So what if I am still hung up…I was deeply connected to Alfie, wasn’t I?
What if my family & friends think I need help to move on?
I guess they don’t understand, do they?
How long does it take to move on from losing your pet?
The questions kept coming in, but the answers – NONE!
Eventually, I started addressing these questions with varied thoughts. I obviously didn’t know the right answer, but I understood that my emotions were genuine.
I began reflecting upon these emotions and realized that pet loss grief is so much about how we change after losing our pets.
There is so much more to this grieving journey than we usually think.
This grief does not need to come with an expiration period.
It can’t be measured by a timeline. It’s measured by love.
It’s a deeply personal experience and unique to everyone. It’s really ok to find yourself still carrying the countless memories and emotions – after 6 months, or 8 months or however many months or years have passed by.
As months passed by, I started finding it difficult to express to people around – family & friends. I knew I didn’t need to explain, but I did want to express something.
All I wanted was just to truly feel my emotions, connect with all my thoughts – happy or sad and cherish all my memories with Alfie.
And how – by putting them into words – the changes I experienced, the emotions I felt, the ways I coped, and the person I was becoming after losing him.
So writing became a way of expressing and also understanding what I was feeling. I started writing… I channelled my emotions, connected with my thoughts and expressed my heart out by penning everything down. And you know what, it made me feel much better!
As I wrote more, I started wondering – there would be so many other people who feel like me, question like me and who would also have experienced a different kind of love after losing their pets. I thought to myself, would it not be good if I shared this journey with everyone who felt the same kind of emotions… just to resonate and connect with all the pet parents and families like me who have lost their furry babies at some point in life.
And that’s how I decided to create this space. I believe this love that we feel beyond the loss is so special and deserves to be shared – so we all feel connected, heard, understood.
This space is about sharing one honest journey through love, loss, and everything that comes after.
I hope that by sharing my own experience, others may feel less alone and recognize that there is no single “right” way to grieve and there is no timeline for it.
You just feel what you feel… You just love the way you love; your bond with your furry baby is special. And the way you feel after losing them is very personal.
Because love doesn’t end when a heartbeat does. It simply stays differently.
And so if you are here because you are carrying the same emotions as me, then I want you to know – this space is for all of us who understand that this love truly goes beyond the loss .. beyond those tiny, loving paws.
